Project Description
Our study will focus on the implications of changing demographics and the increasing presence of “amenity migrants” in low-capacity rural communities for wildfire management and how engagement with/perceptions of amenity migrants influence emergency management decision-making regarding the management of wildfires and wildfire risk. We’re exploring how local emergency managers perceive and engage with these newcomers, and how those perceptions influence critical decisions about wildfire risk and response. If you’re interested in environmental science, sociology, public policy, or emergency management, this is your chance to get involved in timely, relevant, and impactful research.

Team Needs
We’re looking for three motivated students to assist with literature reviews and annotated bibliographies that support this proposal development. If you have a sharp eye for detail and strong organizational skills, we want you. No prior research experience required! This is a unique chance to contribute to research that intersects demographics, environmental science, and public policy. Help us uncover how perceptions of new residents influence wildfire preparedness and response in rural communities.

Special Opportunities
Team members will be exposed to an array of literature in disaster science, sociology, ecology, and fire science. Other research experiences, subject to the availability of external funding, may be available in the future. Exposure to the Hazard Reduction and Recovery Center, Department of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning, and Department of Rangeland, Wildlife and Fisheries Management will be given.
