Project Description
This project aims to develop a system dynamics (SD) model that captures the complexity of sustainable livestock production systems. Livestock systems face multiple challenges including greenhouse gas emissions, feed efficiency, animal health, land use, and socio-economic trade-offs. By applying system dynamics, the project will map causal relationships, feedback loops, and leverage points across the supply chain—from feed production to consumer markets.
Team Needs
This project will benefit from a diverse set of skills and perspectives. Team members with backgrounds in animal science, environmental science, agricultural economics, or systems engineering are especially valuable. Experience with modeling software (e.g., Vensim, Stella, Python), data analysis, or sustainability research will be an asset.
Strong motivation to learn systems thinking and willingness to collaborate across disciplines are more important than prior expertise. Good communication and organizational skills will help ensure effective teamwork. No prior experience in system dynamics is strictly necessary, but curiosity and openness to interdisciplinary approaches are key.
Special Opportunities
Team members will gain training in system dynamics modeling, a valuable skill applicable to a wide range of fields such as sustainability, public health, supply chains, and policy design. Participants will have the opportunity to co-author publications and conference presentations, strengthening their academic portfolio. The project will also foster interdisciplinary collaboration and mentorship, preparing students for research, graduate studies, or careers in sustainability, modeling, and decision science.
